Healthy Women = Healthy Babies
We at Healthy Beginnings understand how essential it is for women of childbearing age to be healthy before as well as during pregnancy. Research has shown that to be the strongest determining factor to a good birth outcome. Since half of pregnancies are unplanned, it is critical women are as healthy as possible before getting pregnant, since the gestational period largely determines one’s health throughout his or her life. The bottom line: Poor health in all forms costs us as a society, both financially and socially, for years to come.
The Wonders of Folic Acid
As an example, statistics show that less than half of women in their childbearing years take folic acid daily – even though you can get enough in any multivitamin, and taking folic acid daily has been shown to reduce birth defects by more than 40%.
Little Babies, Big Risk
Babies born too soon and too small are at much greater risk of developmental delays, learning disabilities, behavior problems and ADHD – all of which contribute to poor performance in school, juvenile justice involvement, etc. Those negative outcomes are much more costly than prevention, such as early entry into prenatal care.
